Propasal - Re Done

Proposal

In this years course I will be creating a short film lasting 5 to 10 minutes with a poster that will come along with it and also a double page spread review on the film. I and my project partner we will be producing the same film however dissimilar posters and the double page spread will also be unique to one another as we must both learn the techniques of making a film on all aspects. In order to make this a successful project I will research in to short film posters and discuss the conventions with my project partner Lauran, we will also research into other short films that are the same genre as ours which is horror. Researching other films will give us different ideas that will be useful in our coursework; we will also be able to see different camera and filming techniques.

The title of the short film will be ‘The Supernatural’ as it reflects the contents of the film directly; however there still consists some vagueness which has an impact on the audience making them want to see the film. Furthermore the target audience we will be appealing to is 15 years and above as it is horror; the reason why we have chosen horror is because, it is a genre that slips into people’s subconscious thinking and has an enigma to it. Horror also has lots of adrenaline, which teenagers and adults appear to be looking for in the time we live in.

The Story line consists of the puzzling vanishings of one girl from a group of friends studying at college. Remaining friends give statements about the dissappearance of their friend to the camera as though they are giving a statement to the police. The person that will get lost appears with a reaction to a mystifying voice coming from a cellar and gets pulled into the cellar. Towards the end of the film the remaining students discover the security camera and see how their friends go missing as the paranormal girl appears on camera, the camera flickers and they see the girl walking up the stairs before they know it the girl appears from behind them an they are also killed as the film ends.

For filming we will produce a risk assessment and recce notes in order to be abiding by health and safety rules of filming for the safety of the film cast and crew. I and my project partner will also produce a timetable which will be a guide for us and make sure that we meet deadlines.

Note: We had to make alterations to the storyline, because we saw that some parts were not available to produce, therefore we went for an option that would allow us to produce a short film without barriers and delays.

Horror Movie Poster Analysis

The way this poster is constructed has made it very clear that it is a poster for a horror/ thriller movie. The eerie colours have also reflected the genre of this movie for example the title in red representins blood and when combined with the font which is striking and 'dangerous' especially the letter 't' empahised like a weapon it looks unsafe and automatically puts the two (most likely) main characters in a vulnerable position.
However the woman looks more in a vulnerbale position, because her face is clear, very white and bright. The whiteness suggests that she is innocent but on the other hand scared (loses colour). She especially looks endangered by the man, who has the shadow of the sharp edged weapon, which shows it may belong to him. The weapon (possibly) is in the centre of poster, which shows that film will be based around it, it also shows that the man and woman share something in common, which is the presence of the metal item. However they also look 'torn', because the 'weapon' is on stand right between them. The colours further add to the effect of the poster, for example the center point of the poster is the darkest, which goes lighter and lighter until the edges are white and then white all around, this hints that the man and women are lost in the world of the metal object. Right beneath the womens face is a smaller image of her, which looks as though she is trying to escape, the image is postioned so that she looks as if she can run out in to the whiteness again, however there is also an image of a creature like being underneath the man. When combining the shadow on his face and his empahised eyes it shows that the supernatural being may possibly be the man himself. The birds on the edges of the whiteness, represent freedom as they fly out in to the whiteness, which emphasises that the woman also wants to be freed.

This poster is really useful and beneficial for me, as i will also produce a horror/thriller short film, with supernatural characters. It is a successful poster as it fits the genre, and has shown how i could make a good quality poster that fits with my film genre.

Film poster analysis

Using Saussares signs: The pink lips indicate a nice girl and hints innocence, however it contrasts deeply with the greenish blue skin colour which somewhat resembles a dead person; hence the title and picture are hinting the contents of the film to some extent. The Light shining from bottom right corner makes one side light and the other dark and shadowed, in a sense the bottom corner looks more lively and 'healthy' whilst the shadowed side looks completely dead and almost rotten, it could be said that the poster is representing the life cycle of the girl; the bottom corner white and alert moving towards the centre again nice glittered pink lips, happiness then suddenly shadowing and darkening to the top corner -as though its the stages of life to death.
Using Barthes myths: The pink glittered lips assume a party girl (stereotypically) when associated with the title it makes one think of a girl dying possibly going out. The colour of skin typical ghostly skin colour, which again resembles a dead person or a ghost, however it also represents serenity and purity.

Overall the poster is very catchy and appears lively and girl at first sight. However reading the meanings behind the colours and the way the picture is positioned, it makes you think of a tragic storyline.

Letter to AS students.

What do you know now that you wished you knew about media coursework in the first year?

Welcome to Chelmsford College,

To begin with i realised how very important the preliminary assignmetn is, because that is where you learn all the techniques of using Photoshop and most importantly producing a product to almost proffesional level. All the tools and techniques you learn in the the first year are extremely cruical for the other assignments that would need to be completed. What I really wish I knew was time and planning. The main coursework requires loads of time and effort, and is very important. The better your coursework the more chances you pass (50% coursework 50% exam!). You must plan your work because you may find that your idea is very hard to apply to your work, which may result as delaying your coursework and sometimes starting all over, which you really don’t want! Do not over exaggerate a project. If it is not possible to make do not work on it because it will only be a waste of time. Trust me time is just vital vital vital! Make sure you spend just as much time on your blog as you do on the practical part of the coursework because it is equally important. I realised that my blog gained me many marks, your blog is proof that you have done work and put effort in to the assignment. If you have minimal amount of posts, that just says, ' I have done very little work'. You don't want that!
Practice makes perfect! So practice using Photoshop and you’ll do wonders with your work also if you do a mistake on Photoshop if you know how to use it you can fix it in no time rather than moaning and nagging Jo for help!
Therfore, although i was awarded a grade B for my coursework in the first year, if i knew how to use Photoshop aswell as i do now, it would have been a pain free year and i would have had more time to revise for the exam. Best advise to give you in my point of view would be 'Work hard'

Good Luck.

The story line will consist of a young girl very typical of the place she lives in, who studies at college she experiences mental visualizations/ hallucinations and voices after the recent death of her friend. After a while she tells her friends who do not believe in what she is saying. But as she alienates herself from her group of friends, they realise it is serious issue; their attempt to help her has come too late as she is found dead with mysterious bruises on her body.

We will be filming in college grounds, at a grave yard with given consent, so that the project is produced in a professional way. We will also be filming at a house, to show that the young girl is experiencing problems at home as well. The shots in college will take place in corridors and the canteen. For filming we will produce a risk assessment and recce notes in order to be abiding by health and safety rules of filming for the safety of the film cast and crew. Me and my project partner will also produce a timetable which will be a guide for us and make sure that we meet deadlines.

Film Analysis - Documentary

The documentary we watched to analyse was based on the doomed life of Biggie Smalls and Tupac. The two hour long documentary was directed, produced and narrated by Nick Broomfield, who has brought the documentary together by interviews most that were primarily filmed by him, music videos and early photographs of the stars. During the documentary at some points Biggie and Tupacs own music was played, which emphasises the sadness of two successful people bothvkilled by drive-by shootings. Broomfield personally interviewed the two stars closest kins, which gives more in-depth information about their life. The documentary was predominantly made up of events that led to the both the deaths. The usefulness of this advert was that, it showed the techniques that would make a successful documentary, however i saw that it was not very beneficial for me as the techniques in there are not necessary for my chosen assignment.

Chanel Advert Analysis

In analysing this advert, i have come across many techniques used to draw attention, which makes it a rather succesful advert. The colours used in this advert are very innocent and tranquil yet provokotive, for example she is wearing white blending in with the white background which represent purity, yet her eye make up which is dark, is known to be sexually provocative. Her hair is smart and tidy, which looks elegant, and in control. The aim of the advert is to draw women to the fragrance to do this they have used these techniques which give women a false consciousness of ''you could be the same'', to further show this; the way the model is positioned and her parted lips are very seductive and appealing to ''men'', therfore this idea is imposed upon the audience(women) who would like to be appealing, who as a result buy the product. The type face of the logo is appears to be done like a signature but also looks rebellious, it catches the eye straight away.
